Not all sub-domains are made equal
Today’s post is slightly different from my previous ones. I’m going to share a testing result from one of my experiments with my subdomains.
In this experiment, I created two content sites using subdomains. Then I placed a link from this blog and done nothing else. I will call this site “Site A”. For the other site, I didn’t give a link from this blog, but I submitted the site to various directories and promoted using outside resources, and I will call this site “Site B”. Both sites are made with XSitePro.
Stats
Site A (Single Link from the Main Page - PR 4)
Google - Main page indexed in 3 Days
MSN - All pages indexed in 2 Days
Yahoo - Main page indexed in 2 Days
Last PR update - Earned PR 4
Receiving organic traffic from Google and mostly from MSN.
Site B (Added to 5+ directories, 5+ one-ways links from PR 4 - 5 sites (3 same IPs, 2 different IPs))
Google - None indexed
MSN - None indexed
Yahoo - None indexed
Last PR update - Stayed PR 0
Findings & Observations
Both sites were built using XSitePro and had the exact same structure. The only difference was the way I promoted the site initially. I don’t claim that my experiment is accurate for all cases, but in my case, rather than spending hours promoting the site elsewhere, placing a link from my blog performed much better in terms of getting indexed in search engines and actually bringing traffic from them for subdomains.
I don’t know what happened between these two sites. But I believe the best way to get your subdomains indexed fast is by giving a link from your main site. I conducted this experiement because I found similar patterns from the stats from other hub sites.
I hope you learned something from my experiment. One thing I learned is that I should always remember to add a link to my subdomains :)

Wow man,
Those are some crazy results. I read through everyone’s comments and then had to do a double take on the original post.
Gonna start testing with these results in mind. I’ll share what I come up with too! This is interesting…
Also, if you guys haven’t seen one of the greatest marketing programs out there check this:

I didn’t believe this when I first saw it. Then started working with it and seen some great results.
Check out what one of my buddies has done (I check yesterday with him - more than 34 sales already):

Best regards to everyone,

Has anybody conducted any tests with regard to subdomain NAMING and it’s importance in indexing/traffic/PR?
Interesting study…

Hi Everybody.
My latest proyect and website began on 24th-February-2006 at:
http://www.expertoslatinos.com
(You can see the domain details if you need) That day Google’s Spyder visited my website and it was added to the main index. Just in 2 hours.
This is a record for me and I’m feeling amazed. I just only added 1 backlink from my personal website (PR 4)
http://www.moriones.com
And 2 more from podcasts directories.
Any ideas about the reasons for this extremely fast result?
Sincerely.
Francisco Moriones

If you link from your main page, which already is doing good with search engines, then it will do better than directories. Directories are starting to die out (at least for Google) because everyone and their mom can start a directory that is loose on what it allows into the directory.
Also - on a directory, that site has say a PR 5 - but it’s linking to hundreds if not thousands of sites. PR is spread between the links on the pages, so you are essentially getting less “juice” from a directory link than from your home page.

Mads,
I think you misunderstood me.
My little experiment was for which way I get indexed faster with my subdomains. And the way you stated your question at DP sounds very OFF to what I’ve said above. Please restate your question or remove that post.
Thank you.

I would love the hear the experts opinion on this experiment, so I have created a thread on the DP SEO forum

Links from sites with a good pagerank are an excellent way to get the spiders visiting - I have been using a link rotator script this month to display links to my new niche sites on my more established sites and the results have been very promising indeed! Excellent blog by the way…I’ve been reading for a while but this is the first time I’ve posted.

What do you mean by “directories”? What/where are they and how do you use them?

Wow, that’s weird.. Who does have an explenation for this?!
Can you test it again with other links perhaps? Maybe it’s just coincidence.. I just don’t get it when it isn’t..

So you placed a link for site A on this sites main page?
Site A (Single Link from the Main Page - PR 4)
And you put a couple of one-way links pointing to site B on PR 4-5 sites?
Site B (Added to 5+ directories, 5+ one-ways links from PR 4 - 5 sites (3 same IPs, 2 different IPs)
Just trying to make sure I get it right.
I’m amazed how you guys get organic traffic so quick. I still don’t get any at all. I’m obviously doing somthing “wrong”. I just wish I knew what it was.
