Bird Flu Virus by Cory Schop
So how did www.birdfluvirus.net come to be? A site now earning on average $125 US a month for 4 hours of work?
Well about 7 months ago I was reading up on SEO and I started becoming very interested in it as well as online marketing. Being the webmaster that I am, I wanted to test it out myself.
Initially the site started as just an experiment. I saw on the news that night a clip on the Bird Flu Virus and thought well that’s interesting I wonder if there is much information online about this? The next steps I took were the following:
1) So I went online to a great site and tool TechnoBloggie.com
2) From here I entered in the phrase Bird Flu Virus and noticed that there were a lot of searches being done each month for these keywords.
3) I then checked overture and sure enough the same thing was true, about 500 searches done a day for Bird Flu.
4) Next I went to google and typed in the keyword Bird Flu. I found that there were not a great deal of results returned so I thought to myself this would be an area that I could rank high in and would be a great area to test out my newly acquired SEO skills.
5) I gathered information on the topic and rewrote it in my own words keeping SEO best practices in mind. (like bolding your keywords and keyword proximity etc)
The next step was to build it. I wanted to use a css xhtml site because I read that search engines more easily crawled these. I considered buying a website template but later decided I didn’t need anything too fancy. So I spent about 2 hours coding the site. With my design background in mind I wanted to blend the google ads in really well for maximized CTR (Click Through Rate). I used CSS to make my article ad links look the same as the google ads and it worked well.
Initially I had planned on having my articles on the left and my main content on the right and I soon found out that this was not the right way to do it.
Alice Seba pointed out to me that the search engines would better index the site with the content closer to the top of the page (So keep this in mind) and she was right, thanks Alice.
I now find myself getting on some days about 500 uniques a day primarily from Yahoo where I rank #2 for the keyword Bird Flu Virus.
Due to the increased popularity of this topic I am averaging about $5 US a day now from Adsense and it’s increasing. Also I have sold a couple textlinks from buyers through Link Worth. Not too bad for an experiment that took at tops 4 hours of work J

I have a similar site, another subject, more content. But the Adsense location it’s very strategic like yours, and it really matters to the visitors.
That’s the problem. I got a few visitors, and a CTR of 100% !!!
I guess google bans sites like that…….
What should i do?
Regards.

Errm this site has no content…
I am sure if the webmaster added a few more pages he will no doubt see more revenue.
I would also like to know how long it took to get to #2 position on yahoo?

I’m curious how long the site had been up and how often NEW content is posted?
Was the site linked to from a high PR site?
would like more specific info, but good general info

Hi Linalee,
That is a great question.
Usualy, the conversion rate extremely low with purhcased traffic. If you find a good traffic source and find a way to convert them, it should work as well. But I do not recommend sending traffic from these site, because of Google’s terms. I’m going to remove that part from the post. Thanks for pointing that out.
But if you send them to a landing page and find a way to go to your Adsense site, it should be ok.

Hi Bo!
Nice to read this post by guest blogger. However, I wonder if buying traffic as described above is bringing real visitors to our sites? I heard that many people said that it resulted nothing, either sales or adsense clicks.
Can you share your thought? Thanks.
