Back to image verification for filtering comment spam
After trying Akimet for a few months, I’ve decided to go back to Thom Skrtich’s SecureImage plugin for filtering comment spam. Akimet worked “ok” for me. One draw back with Akimet is that it requires me to double check the approved comments. It’s taking more time just to see if the comment is legit or not. I think Akimet is ideal for people who’d like to check who’s sending them spam, but it’s not really useful for my needs.
Thus, I’ve decided to back to my old SecureImage plugin, which did excellent job blocking comment spams.

Sorry that I ask.. but will there be new posts at this blog?
I keep coming back, but all the time there are no new posts anymore.. You’re losing visitors this way, and I don’t believe that is what you want ;-)

I’ve not tried Akismet yet, so can’t really comment on its effectiveness or annoyance factor.
To protect my blogs, I use a variety of different plugins ranging from Bad Behaviour to carefully honed blacklist :), which does a fairly good job of protecting my blogs.
But, like the previous commenter said, there’s very little you can do to combat the manual spammers who will actually type he spammy comment and verification code.
As for the readability of your verification codes, I believe it’s the cAsE sEnSaTiViTy that snags quite a few people. Possibly limiting it to case insensitive and omitting numbers/letters that too closely resemble each other (i.e. 0o, 1l, 5s, etc.) may help.
If someone’s eyesight isn’t that great to begin with (or they’ve been staring at a monitor all day), it can blur together.

I don’t know if it has to do with the monitor resolution, but I really don’t know why people are entering wrong numbers. I’ve never had that problem before.
Anyway, I rarely get spam with the image verification plugin. maybe once or twice so far.

Yeah, it’s really a great tool.. But there are still people who spam by hand, how do you cancel them?
Or do you have to deny this messages by hand?
And it looks like it’s case-sensitive.. Tip: Write it down under the image, I had an error 3 times before I had the good security code ;)
