A Lesson Learned from My Wife

Back in April of last year, after I got married, my wife pointed out an unusal habit of mine. I didn’t like to carry coins in my pocket, so at the stores, I either gave them away in a donation box, or just let the merchant keep the coins. My wife was getting annoyed by this, because she likes to carry coins and give an exact amount when she’s paying for something.

One day, she got me good. She reminded me that each coin is no different from a click from Adsense. That reminder changed my whole perspective about my habit of giving away coins. Well, the next day, she got me a blue piggybank and we decided to collect the changes for a year.

I was going to wait until the anniversary, but because it’s full, I couldn’t wait to open it. Now that she’s not here in the US for a month, I’ve decided to open the piggybank today without her. Surprisingly, the total came out to about $190! I didn’t count the pennies because there are too many… I will just take them using a machine down in the market. With this money, I’m going to reward my wife and myself when she comes back from the trip. I miss her so much :)

    Bo,

Nice point. It reminds me of one contextual ad program that I had set on one site. I totally forgot about it as the revenue increased to slow to reach my payment threshold. Well, 3 months later, I got a $200 check. Small little suprise.

I started saving all my change in a coin bank when I was a freshman in college… since then everytime it fills up I cash it in and by a new pair of shoes… as a guy i hate the fact that shoes are so expensive (i generally buy ~$75 shoes), but using my change makes it much easier to swallow…

A couple weeks ago I did a tongue in cheek post about using the penny trays at convenience stores.

    love the site,

Hi Bo.. Interesting post! and it makes me smile. I remember having the same experience too. But I was the one who suggested my boyfriend to collect those pennies in a “chicken” bank (I bought him a chicken shape one, instead of piggy LOL..).

After several months, he opened it up and exchanged the coins to a small grocery store near his home.

It’s true that those coins are just like adsense clicks! Why we would want to expect the adsense clicks but the coins???!!

I used to have the same problem, but now I don’t carry any cash with me.

I only use my check card, so I don’t have to worry about lugging change around.

That is great Bo! I need to take a lesson from that as I also don’t like carrying coins.

By the way, I got married in April of last year as well. April 2nd to be exact. What about you?

This post made me chuckle as it is the exact same thing my wife yells at me for. She is the lady who will hold up the line so she can dig out three pennies so she can get a full dollar back or pay in full.

As far as the coins I have trained my daughters to collect them in their own piggy banks. They are like me now and are not too proud to pick up even a penny if they see one laying on the ground.

What is very small ends up being alot over time and it’s great that they are learning that at such a young age. Imagine if you had saved a simple dollar every day since you were, say, 10. It would be something when you got to 50 or 60.

    It’s the little things.
